Swindon is very unique in many ways, with its genuinely diverse, multicultural fabric, where East meets West, a thriving place where innovation blends seamlessly with heritage.
Not until long ago, I looked upon myself (with a hint of pride and fulfilment, I must confess) as a Technologist. And for good reasons too – having been part of quite a few historical moments and actually creating them – India’s 1st Public Email service, India’s 1st Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) service, India’s 1st Public Internet service, one of India’s 1st International Digital Telephony Exchanges, and then moving on first to Seychelles, the Paradise on Earth to set up mobile and international telecom services for Telecom Seychelles, followed by a stint in Melbourne, Australia designing a state-of-the-art high-speed data network for INMARSAT using a constellation of satellites. And then Destiny brought me over 17 years ago to Swindon which I proudly call my home town now, to work on Intelligent Networks, 4G and now driving the 5G strategy for Carlyle Portfolio Company.
In spite of a huge sense of contentment living and breathing technology for over 25 years, somehow it always felt there is more to life, as if a subtle reminder of the adage that man is born for the society. After travelling to well over 50 countries, it was here in Swindon I discovered my path to Nirvana. Now I take more pride as a Social worker, as a Community champion for the cause of Equality and Diversity, with a passion to deliver Social Innovation through community based enterprise, to bring people together and harness their collective power for a bigger vision. The one accomplishment I cherish the most is establishing the first Hindu temple and cultural centre in Swindon and the region to enhance the lives of thousands and to leverage the strong, united community base to make long lasting contributions to wider society.
Work takes me to some of the most exotic places around the world but I always want to come back home and I have chosen Swindon to be my home. Swindon is very unique in many ways, with its genuinely diverse, multicultural fabric, where East meets West, a thriving place where innovation blends seamlessly with heritage, amidst some picturesque landscape, where precision manufacturing lives in harmony with a strong Services based economy. And Swindon is best placed in terms of location (an hour from London, Reading, Bristol, Oxford, Birmingham), Economy (UK Space Agency, Nationwide, Zurich, National Trust, WH Smith, Intel, Dyson, RWE, Patheon, BMW Mini, Dolby Labs), History (Railways in 1841, Mechanics Institute in 1844, Healthcare in 1871, UK’s 1st lending library, UK’s 1st Computer Museum), Landmarks (Steam Museum, Lydiard, Coate Water, Designer Outlet, English Heritage Archive) and Culture.
Swindon has tremendous promise and potential, and my strategy to fulfil this is to form a coalition of Public sector, Private sector and the Third sector like the First Triumvirate, to transform our aspirations into a roadmap. All the required ingredients of success are there, what we need is sense of collective pride and self-belief, and get on with it. So let us all join hands.
Swindon is on the move – Upwards and Onwards …
